At The Buchan Nursery we compliment our curriculum with a wide range of extracurricular activities. We believe these enhance the children’s development and provide valuable transferable skills. Our parents also find these useful as they are held during nursery hours so you can tailor your nursery sessions to include these activities. We take the hassle out of finding fun, developmentally and age appropriate activities for your child. You can also rest assured that all our extracurricular activities are provided by suitably qualified professionals who are fully compliant with our safeguarding policies.
We offer the following activities within the nursery day:
- Monday - Drama
Mr Duncan engages the children in fun and lively interactive story-telling, nurturing confidence and a love of stories, as well as interacting with each other and recalling certain events. Mr Duncan covers all the classic stories, from traditional Fairy Tales onwards, and each week the stories and drama games offer the children valuable lessons about friendship, courage and making right and good choices.
- Tuesday - French
The Buchan Nursery is proud to offer French lessons for our nursery Children. Madame Callow the Language teacher from The Buchan School will be providing a weekly session to the children.
- Wednesday - Swimming
We offer weekly swimming lessons at the Southern Pool with experienced and professional swimming teachers. The programme is aimed at creating strong, safe and confident swimmers. Learning to swim is a skill for life and we’re thrilled to offer this opportunity.
- Thursday - Dance
Dance with Miss Laura from The Isle of Man Academy of Dance. Miss Laura is a highly experienced dance teacher (and early years practitioner) with the IOM Academy of Dance. She’ll be providing your little one with the opportunity to build on a huge array of skills including flexibility, coordination, balance, physical & emotional development through fun and exciting creative movement.
- Friday - Music and Action Kids
All children need music in their lives. We are excited to include music lessons into our activities programme. The children are introduced at a very gentle rate to a variety of instruments and musical adventures through exciting lessons with The Buchan School music teachers. Music is a big part of The Buchan School life and the children have the opportunity to begin a music education at The Buchan Nursery which can continue through Buchan Pre-Prep and Prep Departments and on to King William's College.
- Buchan Rangers
We incorporate Buchan Rangers into each child’s timetable to ensure that every child gets the benefits of the beautiful Buchan grounds. We combine the benefits of a unique outdoor experience with the provision of our well-equipped indoor setting. Our large wooded area is perfect for outdoor adventures where children are able to use their imagination, develop vital physical skills and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Learning whilst playing in the outdoors is key to the curriculum at The Buchan Nursery.
As well as our regular extracurricular activities we make use of the abundance of wonderful activities available to us on our beautiful Island. We take regular trips to our local parks, library, beach and town centre. Castletown has plenty to offer for little learners and we take every opportunity to benefit from this.
We take the children out into the countryside and to the shoreline to explore nature, have fun and learn whilst actively enjoying the fresh air.
Travelling in our minibus the children will be taken to a variety of locations across the Island chosen for their safety, the opportunities available, the children’s interests, the proximity and their suitability for the weather. It is the intention to operate in all weathers (subject to cancellation in extreme conditions, such as snow) throughout the year.
Some of the activities the children will enjoy include:
- Den Building
- Nature Walks
- Beach Combing & Fossil Hunting
- Nature Craft Activities
- Nature Awareness Learning
If you’d like to join us on an excursion we’d love to have you come along. Please speak to your child’s teacher or the Head of Nursery and we can arrange this.
