Marine Conservation

Posted in School News

On Thursday, Jessica (U6) gave a warm welcome to Dr Peter Duncan, the Island's Senior Marine Environment Officer who spoke to the Sixth Form ESS and Biology students on the topic of Marine Biodiversity around the Isle of Man. Dr Duncan gave an informative and interactive talk on the strategies and delicacies of balancing economic, political and conservation demands on maintaining stocks and then went on to speak of the designation of nine new Marine Nature Reserves around the Island which will afford greater species and habitat protection and provide nursery beds for scallops. A fascinating and detailed talk which illuminated the different interests involved in managing marine resources for both wildlife biodiversity and sustainable resource use for the Isle of Man's people. Bogdan (U6) gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the students.
