An introduction to Brass instruments week at the Buchan

Posted in School News

Mr John Wood  is our new brass instrumental teacher at The Buchan School and King William’s College.

He was Principal Tuba with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa and has worked with prestigious orchestras and ensembles including the London Philharmonic, Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Beijing Symphony and Black Dyke Brass Band.

John is from the island and went to the Royal Northern College of Music and Royal Academy of Music.

He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music Junior School, Dulwich College International School of Beijing and China Central Conservatory of Music amongst others.

Form1’s, 2’s and 3’s enjoyed listening to him as he gave a whistle stop tour of the brass family by introducing them to the trumpet, trombone and tuba. He demonstrated how each instrument sounded and explained how they worked. The pupils also had the opportunity to try the instruments for themselves.

Mr Wood is going to play some pieces during the Friday 11th October afternoon assembly in order that every pupil has the chance to hear him.
