On Bank Holiday Monday (May 6th), 120 children took part in the annual Buchan School Triathlon held at King William’s College. In terms of the number of competitors, this is by far the largest triathlon held on the Isle of Man, and all 120 competitors managed to complete the course. The under 9 age group swam 3 lengths of KWC pool, cycled 1,000 metres on grass and ran 600 metres, whereas the under 11s swam 8 lengths, cycled 2,000 metres and ran 1,200 metres. Local firm SMP kindly supplied race T shirts for everyone and all finishers were presented with commemorative medals. The whole emphasis of the day was on having fun and introducing the children to the exciting sport of triathlon. The aim was to complete the course, and although finishing positions were not even recorded, the natural competitiveness of the children shone through, resulting in some dramatic sprint finishes. All the money raised from the day will go to local charity Hospice.
