Biology

IGCSE

Students start their CIE IGCSE in Lower Fifth and can either sit Biology as part of the Coordinated Science (0654) or as an individual separate science (0610). All students study the same material at the same level until Upper Fifth where they are then taught different material depending on what IGCSE they will be sitting. Students can sit either the Extended Paper (A*-G) or the Core Paper (C-G).

The aim of the Biology department is to have finished teaching the syllabus by the end of the first term of the Upper Fifth, allowing students to be taught exam technique and allow for revision between the January exams and study leave.

All students use the same textbook 'Biology for IGCSE, Williams Fobery Adams' published by Nelson Thornes.

Students are always encouraged to ask their teacher for help if needed but they can also attend the Biology clinic, which is run on Monday lunchtimes from 1340 until 1410.

The students are assessed at the end of Upper Fifth by written examinations and we do not do the coursework element, preferring the practical exam in Coordinated Science (0654) and the alternative to practical exam in the individual Biology course (0610).

IB

Biology is the study of life and consequently, living organisms as well as the chemical reactions required for life are studied. Students will develop an appreciation about how Biology impacts our lives, learn new skills and techniques used by biologists, acquire detailed knowledge about several important key areas of Biology and learn how apply the knowledge to allow them to interpret data.

In Sixth Form, students can chose to study IB Biology as their Group 4 Science at Higher or Standard Level. All students follow a common core and Higher Level students then study additional material. At both levels this is supplemented by the study of two options chosen by the teacher.

Part of the course is spent on internally assessed coursework related to all aspects of the course and includes 10 hours on an interdisciplinary project.

The syllabus includes the study of topics such as cells, genetics, ecology, evolution, human health and physiology, cell respiration, photosynthesis and plant science.

The students are assessed at the end of two years of study by written examinations as well as the internally assessed coursework.

I loved King William’s College from the start. I made up my mind within an hour of our time there that I wanted my son to attend. You have to come to College to understand what makes it stand out from the rest. It is a place of genuinely caring and friendly people. Another aspect of College we love is its vast international community. Our son has made some great friends and as a result has come to appreciate and respect other cultures and traditions. Our son loves College. He loves the independence to make choices, the easy access he has to his tutors, the opportunity to make his own mistakes and learn from them, but most of all, he loves the fact that expert assistance is always a breath away.
