Basketball Invincibles!

Posted in School News

Congratulations to the Junior (U13) Basketball team who won the final against CRHS in a gripping encounter at the NSC. The boys had gone through the league season winning all of their matches and beat SNHS in the semi final to set up this nail biting clash. The boys started magnificently and were 14-0 up after the first quarter. However, CRHS changed tactics and applied plenty of defensive pressure in the next two quarters to make it 27-23 going into the final 10 minutes. The boys decided to stay true to the full court press system, which had worked so well all season. However, it led to some very tired legs on the court and we’d clocked up a number of team fouls going into the final minutes. Key rebounder Leo was then ‘fouled out’ for the last few minutes and the boys really had to dig deep with some grit and resilience on display at the death.

With 40 seconds to go, CRHS came back within two points and they were on the attack. Fortunately the boys managed to intercept the ball and score to take the margin to four points with 12 seconds left. Thankfully this was enough for a 35-31 victory and the team and supporters were finally able to enjoy and appreciate the moment.

This was the first time KWC had won this competition since 2003, with CRHS having a stranglehold on the junior competition in every year since. A massive well done to CRHS for how they came right back at us and made it such a thrilling final. Huge congratulations to Ellis (U12) for being named MOTM in an U13 final. It really was a huge squad effort throughout the season though. To win both the Year 7 (U12) and Junior (U13) competitions in the same season is a brilliant achievement that the boys should be proud of! Considering that they do not have a full size court to practice on makes it even more remarkable.

Thanks to Mr Dunn and Mr Crabtree for giving up their time to help coach and officiate. Thank you to the parents who came and supported the boys and to Mr Leinwand for organising the training at the NSC ahead of the final.
