Linguistics Olympiad

Posted in Alumni News

When I decided to take part in the linguistics competition for the selection of the Isle of Man team, I wasn’t really sure what to expect and what the discipline of linguistics would entail. To my surprise it revealed to be so much more than just the translating exercise I had imagined it would be.

Linguistics is not just about being able to speak different languages, but it is more about understanding the nature of languages and how these evolved to be the most important communication tool employed by humans. Participating at the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) 2019 was a great honor as it not only gave me a chance to explore a discipline I wasn’t familiar with, but also because it gave me the opportunity to travel to an exotic country such as South Korea and meet many amazing and interesting people with whom I had a passion in common. I am so grateful to all the people that made this trip possible and I encourage young students to take part in these competitions as they are fun and exciting and can also open many doors in the context of future studies and employability.
