Salters' Festival of Chemistry competition

On the 11th of May 2010, 8 pupils (James Allen, Ashenafi Ashenafi, Jennifer Chan, Sami Benbatoul, Gabriel Wilson, Matthew Vincent, James Gallacher and James Hansford ) accompanied by 2 members of staff, (Mrs Holden and Miss Hills), travelled to Liverpool John Moores University to attend the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry competition.

The competition involved a forensic activity in which we had to carry out a series of practical analyses of samples collected from the scene of a crime (mock crime scene) in order to find out what happened and how.

We were judged on safety in the lab and in handling chemicals along with our teamwork, presentation, and our forensic report and conclusion.

We did exceptionally well and were placed 3rd out of 18 teams (made up from the 14 competing schools in the North West area).

On behalf of the pupils involved I would like to thank Mrs Holden and Miss Hills for accompanying us on the trip.  Also, a special thanks to Mrs Holden for teaching us all the skills and techniques required for the competition during Science Club and also for organising everything... It really was an excellent trip!

The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry are an initiative of the Salters' Institute. Their objective is to help promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young.

Since 2005 the Salters' Festivals of Chemistry have been in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry.  We thank them for their continued support.

The Festivals are one-day fun events held at universities throughout the UK and Ireland. They begin in late March and run through to mid June.

Salters' Festivals provide the opportunity for enthusiastic young students to spend a day in a university department and to take part in practical chemistry activities which are fun! Prizes are awarded to the winning teams and all students receive participation certificates and fun prizes.

During the last eight years over 20,000 students have experienced the fun of practical chemistry through the Salters' Festivals and sponsorship in support of the Festivals has been raised from over fifty companies.
