Everyone knew we would be missing a fair amount of the school at the beginning of this term. We first proved the point this Tuesday, when we all fitted into the School Chapel easily.
Iceland’s volcanic eruption is a nuisance, especially for the overseas students, and those on holiday. As boarders, we have noticed this considerably. We understand it is difficult for the Upper 6th and Upper 5th seeing as their exams are drawing ever nearer, and there are students stranded in several different countries all over the world. Some of them, the exam students mostly, have been making their way back to the school over land and sea to prepare. But some remain stuck until as late as the beginning of May.
As Upper 4th Boarders, living on the island, we have been in the house since the first available night. We are practically living in luxury with a whole boarding house to ourselves and no worries about disrupting any other people – a total of seven of us living in a house, suited for around 40!
But apart from the extended drama of the volcano the school has been going forth as normal. Although, this term the Upper 4th have been introduced to the school’s own branch of Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Pupils are going to undertake a term of experience, including field days and training activities in all the different sections, before deciding whether they will stay and join the army, navy or airforce section.
This term is probably the most challenging. All major exams occur during the next few weeks. We wish all candidates good luck! Nine weeks until the summer holidays – a well earned break!
