On 11, 12 and 13 December, Chapel Choir produced moving and profoundly impressive services of Nine Lessons and Carols. This was not a concert, but a sincerely spiritual event in which the quality of music was of a supremely high standard. Highlights included two movements of The Messiah (And The Glory and the Hallelujah Chorus), Christmas Lullaby by John Rutter sung by Girls’ Choir directed by Anya Morgans, and wonderful descants enhanced by Jennifer Cook on trumpet. Solo sections were sung by Chloe Wood (who is, with Louise Coase, Head of Choir 2012-13), Chris Chan, Solene Bauer, Seanne Kendrick, Frank Fang and James Allen.
The services were the result of countless hours of work by pupils and staff over the previous months. Such a genuinely glorious event is never forgotten and makes all of the tremendous effort from everyone involved worth it. Music never ‘just happens’. My thanks to members of Chapel Choir (staff and pupils) for their dedication and determination, to Anya and her magnificent Girls’ Choir, to Gareth Moore for the hours of work he put in and his wonderful organ playing.
The Chapel Choir is significantly larger and has more (talented!) boys in it than at any time in recent memory. This gives the sound a desirable balance. Having taught and adjudicated choral music for a long time, and having been affiliated to Cathedrals and distinguished secular groups, our Chapel Choir’s quality would be admired at any school or church anywhere in the world. When we get back from Christmas holidays, we celebrate Epiphany with the treats that everyone else were enjoying while we were busy rehearsing!
