A Taste of Culture 2023

A fantastic evening of entertainment and delicious cuisine from around the world was had on Thursday 3rd February, for the annual Taste Of Culture event. In aid of the charity Speranta Terrei, an organization in northern Moldova raising awareness of tuberculosis, students performed different songs, dances, poetry and instrumental music from around the world.

China – Rita danced ‘Old Things in Luotyang’

Germany – Sophie sang ‘99 Luftballons’

Russia -Kira and Zlata read ‘Countrymen’s Children’

France – Isabelle sang ‘La Vie En Rose’

Scotland –Alyth played a ‘Set of Scottish Tunes’ on the harp

Philippines – Emilia sang ‘I Still Recall The Wonderous Moment’’

South Africa—Mikhaela sang ‘Buwan’

Brazil –Finlay played ‘Tequila Sunrise’ on the trumpet

China – Sara sang ’If’

England -Farrel sang ‘From The Dining Table

Following the performances, The Barrovian Hall was transformed into a world of food for the food competition. Food from India, South Africa, Israel, Japan, China, Ireland, Germany, Russia, Malta and The Philippines was available to taste and enjoy. Guests could then vote on their favourite food.

One voting slip summed up the quality on display last night: ‘Best Food: Everyone Fantastic; Best Desert: All Delicious; Best Presentation: Can’t Decide’.

However, winners finally did emerge with a record number of ties:

Best Food: Israel, Joint runners-up: China/Philippines

Best Desert: Malta, Joint runners-up: China/South Africa

Joined Best Presentation (and a first for ToC): China/Ireland; Runner-up: South Africa

The event raised an amazing £1885 for Speranta Terrei. It will go a long way to secure healthy food, school/College supplies and much needed heating for the family supported through it.

Thank you to all students and families for the performances and food and thank you to all the College staff for helping with this event.
